Biography
Hiroaki Mitsugashira, MD, PhD, is a transplant surgeon-scientist specializing in pancreatic islet transplantation, oxygen biology, and bioengineering approaches for diabetes therapy. His research focuses on developing minimally invasive extrahepatic transplantation strategies, including subcutaneous islet transplantation and oxygen-supportive graft environments to improve engraftment and long-term graft survival.
Prior to joining the Komatsu Lab at UCSF, he trained in transplant surgery at Tohoku University, Japan. Dr. Mitsugashira has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and international presentations in the fields of transplantation, regenerative medicine, and stem cell-derived islet biology, while also maintaining clinical expertise as a board-certified gastroenterological and transplant surgeon.
